Community Networking for Disaster Resiliance

A Co-Design & Ideation Workshop

About the Workshop

The internet has connected us, but it has also taught us to depend on centralized, highly-technical infrastructure for our communication. This infrastructure may not be designed to meet the needs of all members of a community and may be unable to withstand a rapid-onset disaster, like an earthquake or a flood.

What happens when our communication infrastructure is damaged or fails to meet community needs during a disaster?

This workshop is designed to help participants reflect, share experiences, and explore ways of using decentralized networking technology to share information and organize direct-aid within their communities during a rapid-onset disaster, when internet or cell service may be unavailable or unable to meet emergent community needs.

No previous technical knowledge, skill, or experience is required to participate!

This workshop is hosted by a team of graduate students from the University of Washington's Human Centered Design & Engineering Master's program in collaboration with Fognet, a mesh networking technology.

What to Expect

A lot of fun!

A collaborative, respectful, and inclusive environment for learning and creating!

In this hands-on workshop, participants will collaborate to surface needs and develop ideas and designs for ways to meet their communication needs during a disaster, including ways the Fognet mesh networking project might be able support community members and responders during an emergency situation.

We'll supply crafting supplies, some technology, food, drinks, and exercises to help participants collaboratively design decentralized network solutions.
